The Receding Waves by Anita Mohandas
The Receding Waves is a deceptively simple tale of the magic of
childhood and the loss of innocence. The story, sketched by Gouri
through her reflections, is about a friendship — a beautiful friendship
between her and a lonely handicapped child, Shree, whose boundless
optimism and vivacity for life, in spite of her being stricken by polio, are
in stark contrast to Gouri’s reserved, self-conscious nature. Being
brought up in the small and picturesque coastal state of Kerala, amidst
its temples, myths, omens, superstitions, astrological predictions and
tantric rituals, we get a peep into the life of a pristine culture; still kept
alive.
This is also the story of women and the shackles of tradition, religion
and relationships that bind them down: of little delights, huge
disappointments, of life’s lessons learned the hard way, of spiritual
dilemmas, and finally, the search for the self.
A dreamy tale — the flow and ebb of a thousand waves, slowly but
steadily wearing away both sweet nostalgia and the scars of time...

Here is a wave on the ascent. Remarkably fresh, original and full of life
and insight, this debut work impressed me immensely
